2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Recap
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season produced 13 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). It was an above-normal season by accumulated cyclone energy, with an ACE of 130.8. Three storms reached Category 5 intensity: Erin, Humberto, and Melissa. The season caused at least 123 direct deaths and about $503 million in United States damage, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Notable storms
Hurricane Erin became the first Category 5 of the season in mid-August, peaking with 160 mph winds over the open Atlantic. It stayed offshore but generated swells along the East Coast.
Tropical Storm Chantal was the only system to make landfall in the United States in 2025, coming ashore in South Carolina in early July and dropping heavy rain across the Carolinas.
Hurricane Humberto reached Category 5 in late September east of Bermuda. No hurricanes made landfall in the United States this season, the first time that happened since 2015.
Hurricane Melissa was the strongest storm of the year and one of the most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record. It peaked at 190 mph and made landfall in Jamaica near that intensity, causing catastrophic damage. Melissa was responsible for most of the season's deaths and damage.

Retired names
The World Meteorological Organization retired Melissa from the rotating name list at its March 2026 meeting because of the catastrophic damage in Jamaica. It will be replaced by Molly when the list is used again in 2031. No other 2025 names were retired.
