How storms are named and categorized
A tropical depression has organized showers and thunderstorms with sustained winds below 39 mph. It gets a number but not a name.
A tropical storm has winds of 39 to 73 mph. This is the threshold where the NHC assigns a name from the season list.
A hurricane has winds of 74 mph or higher. The Saffir-Simpson scale rates hurricanes from 1 to 5 based on wind speed.
